la venezia: altadena fire rebuild
Location: Altadena, California
Program: Residential / Fire Rebuild
Style: Mediterranean
Status: Under Construction
After the Eaton Fire, the homeowners were not looking to simply replace what was lost. They wanted a home that felt familiar and comfortable, while better responding to how they live today.
The design was shaped by conversations about their previous home, what they missed most, and what they had always hoped to improve. Inspiration came from their travels to Naples and the simplicity of the Italian countryside, with textured walls, warm materials, natural light, and spaces that feel collected over time.
The new single story home is designed with aging in place in mind and carefully organized within a small lot. Built in shelving, quiet reading areas, and other details reflect the way the homeowners live, while changes to the grade improve accessibility and strengthen the connection between the house and the street.
Clay tile, limestone, quarter sawn oak, aged brass, and Roman clay create a warm and restrained material palette. Fire resistant assemblies, ember resistant venting, and defensible space strategies are integrated throughout the design.
Rather than recreating what was there before, the new home carries forward the memories of the previous home while creating a place for its next chapter.
